Letters of Pontius Pilate

Letters of Pontius Pilate

Written during His Governorship

Nothing in this 2002 paperback version of the 1928 original indicates that it is a work of fiction. If fact, there is a carefully worded blurb on the copyright page that, in my opinion, deliberately obfuscates the genres that reads:

In order to make original editions of historical works available to scholars at an economical price this facsimile of the original edition is reproduced from the best available copy and has been digitally enhanced to improve legibility, but the text remains unaltered to retain historical authenticity.

To me, the inclusion of “historical works,” “scholars,” and “historical authenticity” serve to give the impression that this is a non-fiction work.

On March 30, 1928 The Manchester Guardian (now just The Guardian) printed a review of the British edition which was released that day by Jonathan Cape Ltd. It turned out that William Percival Crozier (a reporter and later editor for that same newspaper) was well versed in the Latin and Greek classics, as well as the Bible, all of which inspired his writing his first novel. And the paper identified it as such — a novel.

The American edition was published shortly thereafter, but printed without noting that it was a novel. As an afterthought the publisher, J.H. Sears & Company in New York, glued a tipped-in notice on the flap that said “these letters are purely fictitious and composed by Crozier for the purpose of presenting a picture of what might reasonably be supposed to have happened in the time of Pontius Pilate.” Both publishers listed Crozier as the “editor” in order to enhance the image of these being real letters.

I suspect that Crozier was influenced by Gesta Pilati: The Reports, Letters and Acts of Pontius Pilate. Being the Official Records of Pilate as made to Tiberius Caesar Emperor of Rome, Concerning the Apprehension, Trial and Crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth written by William Overton Clough and published in 1880 by Robert Douglass. I’ll read that one soon and let you know. The Library of Congress Cataloging-in-Publication Data lists Ann Wroe’s Pontius Pilate (Random House 2000) as biography despites its, um, enhancements, whereas Paul L. Maier’s Pontius Pilate (Kregel Publications 1968) proudly states on the cover “A Novel.”

Now let’s talk copyrights…

(Original Title: Lieut. Gulliver Jones)
A long-lost classic of Martian adventure

by Edwin L. Arnold

‎ Ace Books 1964

224 pages

2/4
Originally published in London in 1905 as Lieutenant Gulliver Jones by Brown, Langham and Co., Ltd, the title is sometimes refered to as "Lieut. Gulliver Jones: His Vacation." It is claimed that this story was a source for Edgar Rice Burroughs's Barsoom, and while Arnold’s protagonist Gulliver Jones is nothing like Burroughs's John Carter, Carter is very much like “Phra the Phoenician” – another Arnold book. As for Arnold, he was probably influenced by “A Journey in Other Worlds” by John Jacob Astor (1894), and by “The Time Machine” by H. G. Wells (1895).

This copy is a part of Gary G. Johnson’s Classic Science Fiction Collection gifted in 2019.

I first read this when this ebook version came out in 2017 and decided to pick it up again after reading The Children’s Blizzard by David Laskin. As [will be] mentioned in the previous post, I thought the storms had been the same one, with the books telling the story as it took place in two different parts of the country—only to discover that there were two separate storms two months apart.

While Mary Cable’s blizzard treatment does not have the technical and scientific explanations that David Laskin provides in his, hers is just as good a read, and she refrains from inventing dialog. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable read, given the subject matter, and while she relied heavily on contemporary news accounts (as did other authors), she has a unique talent to animate the written word. The narrative of the plight of the harbor pilots is extremely poignant, and in fact gave me a glimpse of a bygone industry—and yes, I know that there are still harbor pilots but how they go about their job was drastically changed as a result of this event. Overall this is a great look at life in 1888 New York and New England, albeit one that is seen through tragedy.

Mary Cable (1920 – 2013) wrote over a dozen books (not to mention her time at American Heritage magazine) including one I’m looking forward to reading later, Black Odyssey: The Case of the Slave Ship ‘Amistad’ which she wrote long before nearly anyone else took up the topic (Viking Press 1971). What bothers me about this ebook edition is that the cover art is NOT from Cable’s book, but rather it is from yet another work on the subject titled The Blizzard of’88 (because of course it is) by Irving Werstein published by Thomas Y. Crowell Company 1960. I bought a copy and will describe that version in about twelve or so posts from here. Meanwhile, here is the original cover:

I'm back. Yet again

I'll be doing some house cleaning for a bit as I fix or remove links that have broken since I was here last, then I need to remove the errant transportation posts from here and repost them over on SERVISIDE.

I'm also removing the nontransportation posts and moving them to Not The Sharpest Crayon In The Blogs as On The Nightstand will henceforth will be dedicated solely to books (although any transportation books I read will be mentioned on SERVISIDE as well).

Then I’ll post a partial list here of what I read in 2023, and after that regularly post books as I finish them.

And I need to get this done before I have pizza with Jesse on Friday.
